Elgato Facecam 4K: Build the Shot Around Your Desk Distance
THE BUYING TAKE
A configurable webcam for a planned desk shot, provided fixed focus, USB bandwidth and separate audio suit your setup.
Best for
Seated presenters and creators who can arrange a consistent camera distance and already have a suitable audio input.
The trade-off
No built-in microphone; fixed-focus distance matters. USB 2.0 limits resolution, and HDR does not run at the headline 4K60 mode.

A webcam upgrade is easier to judge when you know where you will sit. Elgato Facecam 4K uses a fixed-focus lens, so the practical starting point is your desk distance rather than a promise that the camera will continually refocus on anything you hold up.
This guide covers the black 10WAF9901 webcam, identified as device model 20WAF9901. It uses Elgato's published specifications and setup guidance, not an original image-quality test. The appeal is a configurable camera for a deliberate desktop shot; it is less straightforward if your main activity involves moving objects very close to the lens.
Measure your normal seated position
Elgato specifies a 30–120 cm focus range at 4K resolution. Measure from the proposed camera position to your face while sitting naturally, then think about how far you lean forward or back during a call. This makes the fixed-focus design a concrete fit question.
For a presenter who stays within a planned area, fixed focus avoids relying on an autofocus system to choose the subject. That does not mean the webcam guarantees a sharp image at every distance. Holding a small product close to the lens is a different use case from speaking across a desk.
The supplied monitor mount is one placement option. The quick-start guide also describes using the quarter-inch thread with a separate stand or tripod. Choose a position that lets you look near the camera without forcing an uncomfortable sitting posture. A camera on top of a tall monitor may need a different arrangement from one on a laptop.
Match the video mode to the USB connection
The technical specification lists 2160p60 in MJPG when using USB 3.0. HDR modes are listed at 30 frames per second, including 2160p30. Those are separate choices: the presence of both 4K60 and HDR in the feature set does not mean they combine into a 4K60 HDR mode.
Elgato recommends a direct USB 3.0 or later computer connection for best performance. Its guide says USB 2.0 operation is limited to 1080p with MJPG compression. Check the port's data standard, not merely whether the plug fits. The included two-meter USB-C cable gives you a starting point for arranging that connection.
Also inspect the application receiving the picture. Choose a supported format there and make a short recording or test call. A camera's maximum output is not, by itself, evidence that every conferencing service will transmit that same format to the other person.
Arrange light and sound before effects
The setup guide recommends good lighting and avoiding dim spaces. Treat that as part of the purchase plan. Try the proposed camera position with your usual room lighting, and consider whether your face will be evenly visible through the times of day when you normally work.
There is no built-in microphone. If you already use a headset or dedicated microphone, this may fit your setup neatly. Otherwise, budget for a separate audio source and confirm which input the calling or recording app selects. Clear video and an accidental laptop microphone selection are separate problems.
Camera Hub provides controls such as manual exposure and color looks. Begin with a natural, usable image before adding a stylized treatment. A sensible test is to record a short spoken introduction, then check framing, brightness and sound together rather than evaluating a silent preview alone.
Decide whether filter support solves a real need
Facecam 4K accepts 49 mm lens filters. The manufacturer's guide explains attaching one gently to the threaded lens cone. This gives users another way to shape the image, but it does not make a filter necessary for ordinary calls.
Check the exact package before assuming an accessory is included. Elgato's standard box list contains the webcam, monitor mount and USB cable; a separate store promotion or an illustrated filter is not automatically part of every seller's package. The filter shown in this article's detail image demonstrates the connection.
Facecam 4K makes the most sense when you can plan a stable seated shot and already understand your audio arrangement. Verify distance, lighting, USB capability and the receiving app first. Its extra resolution and configurable image controls are useful options within that setup, rather than substitutes for arranging it.
