Elgato Neo vs MK.2 Shortcut Controllers: Paging or More Visible Keys?

Neo pairs eight LCD keys with dedicated page controls and an Infobar. The classic MK.2 puts fifteen keys in view; choose around the commands you need together.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose Neo for a focused grid with dedicated paging; choose classic MK.2 for more commands visible at once and a detachable cable.

Count the commands you want visible during one task before choosing a shortcut controller. The white Elgato Stream Deck Neo and black classic Stream Deck MK.2 both put computer actions on labeled LCD keys, but they make different compromises between the first layout and navigation. They are alternatives for one wired desk controller, not a pair you need to buy together.

Neo provides eight configurable keys, an Infobar and two Touch Points. The selected MK.2 provides fifteen keys. Both use the Stream Deck desktop application, so this choice is mainly about the controls you want in front of you and how the hardware fits your desk. Neither creates useful shortcuts until you configure them.

Count what must stay on the first layout

Eight keys may cover a focused group of repeated actions without much organization. For a call or an editing task, first list the supported controls you actually use. If that short list fits, Neo's smaller grid is a reason to choose it rather than add unused positions.

MK.2's fifteen keys offer more room for commands that need to remain visible together. That is its first distinct buying reason: a larger working layout can reduce the need to leave one group to reach another. The advantage matters when the extra positions solve a recurring navigation problem.

More keys are not automatically more useful. Someone who repeats five commands may gain little from fifteen positions, while someone who needs twelve related controls may find eight restrictive. Count a real task rather than every shortcut you could possibly assign across the whole computer.

Choose how to reach the occasional actions

Neo places two capacitive Touch Points beside its Infobar for navigating pages. That is a second buying reason when you prefer a focused grid with dedicated controls for moving to another layout. The Infobar is a separate information display, not an extra row of eight action buttons.

Both models also support software folders, profiles and Multi Actions. A folder opens another group of keys; a profile organizes a layout for a particular app or workflow. These shared features expand assignments beyond the number of physical buttons, but they do not put every assigned command in view at once.

MK.2's wider first layout is useful if you want to keep a folder gateway alongside more regular commands. Neo can still handle a larger collection through paging, provided changing layouts feels acceptable during the task. Neither the Infobar nor a larger grid guarantees that every plugin reports live status or supplies your desired function.

Compare the cable path with the stand arrangement

Neo has an integrated stand with three positions and a fixed 90-centimeter USB-C cable. Its stand adjustment gives you a choice of presentation angle without a separate stand component. Its fixed cable also deserves attention before you decide where it will sit.

Measure the route to your computer's available port, including anything the cable must pass around. A short fixed lead may suit a nearby laptop and be less convenient for a distant tower. It is not interchangeable in the same way as a detachable cable.

MK.2 includes a separate desktop stand and a detachable USB connection, giving it a second buying reason when changing or replacing the cable matters. Elgato says current packaging uses USB-C-to-C, while earlier packaging used C-to-A. Check the actual box and port rather than assuming the older cable is always included.

Compare each occupied setup, not bare dimensions alone. MK.2's listed 118 by 84 by 25 millimeters excludes its stand. Neo's integrated arrangement is different, so treating those measurements as identical footprint conventions would make the comparison misleading.

Verify the common software before paying for different hardware

The shared software means compatibility can eliminate both choices at once. Elgato's current requirements specify Windows 11, 64-bit, with an Intel or AMD processor, or macOS Ventura 13 and later. It warns that Windows on ARM may not work as expected. Older device specifications do not replace the current software check.

Verify the required hotkey or integration before designing the entire layout around it. Both can organize supported actions, but neither replaces the target app, supplies missing features or guarantees a complex sequence will behave correctly without configuration.

Choose Neo for a focused eight-key layout, dedicated paging and an integrated adjustable stand when the fixed cable reaches. Choose classic MK.2 for more simultaneously visible commands and a detachable cable arrangement. If keyboard shortcuts already cover the routine, or configuring a separate controller feels burdensome, neither is essential.
