Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen: Count the Sources Before Recording
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose by the sources that must record together and the monitoring route, then verify the host and cables. Compare more inputs for two microphones or a stereo line source.
Best for
A defined one-microphone plus mono line/instrument recording setup with verified software and monitoring needs.
The trade-off
Only one XLR mic input. The front jack is mono, direct monitoring does not include software effects, and headphones share the line-output feed.

Before buying an audio interface, write down what you want to record at the same time. A singer with one microphone and an electric guitar has a different connection plan from two people speaking into separate microphones. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen becomes a more useful candidate when that small count comes before the specification list.
This assessment concerns the standard fourth-generation Solo interface, not the Solo Studio package with a microphone and headphones, an older Solo or a larger Scarlett. Budget for the equipment and cables you actually need rather than treating every photograph of a recording setup as the contents of the box.
Count physical inputs, not just channels
The Solo places a 6.35mm line/instrument input on the front and an XLR microphone input on the rear. These are different input types. A two-input description does not mean the unit has two XLR microphone preamps for a two-microphone conversation.
Focusrite's connection guide assigns the front input to a guitar or another suitable instrument with Inst enabled. For a line-level device, it says to switch Inst off and notes that the input remains mono. A balanced TRS connector should not be confused with a stereo keyboard input.
If stereo keyboard recording or two microphones is central to your plan, compare the required physical inputs before ordering. That is more useful than buying adapters first and discovering that the intended sources still cannot be recorded in the needed arrangement.
Set capture level separately from listening level
The input gain controls determine the level sent into the computer. Speaker and headphone controls determine how loudly you listen. Turning up the headphones is not a substitute for setting a sensible recording level at the source.
The documented Gain Halo uses green, amber and red indications. Red means the input has clipped and the gain should be reduced. Use a representative loud passage while setting levels, then listen back to a short recording rather than trusting a quiet opening sentence.
The 48V control supplies phantom power to the XLR input, not the front jack. Follow the connected microphone's instructions before enabling it. The presence of a power button does not mean every microphone requires that setting.
Leave time to check the actual microphone placement and the room as well. An interface cannot make a distant voice close to the microphone, and a clean connection is only one part of obtaining a usable recording.

Decide which monitoring path you want
Direct monitoring lets you hear the incoming signal without sending it through the computer's recording path first. That can help when software monitoring produces a distracting delay. It is a routing choice, not evidence that every plugin or computer setup runs without latency.
Focusrite explains that the direct input sound is not processed by software effects. If hearing an amp simulation or another recording effect is essential, follow the software-monitoring instructions for that workflow instead of expecting Direct Monitor to reproduce it.
Check that you are not unintentionally hearing both paths at once. Start with one deliberate monitoring arrangement, make a brief test and confirm what the performer hears. Keep the listening level comfortable while changing settings.
The headphone and rear line outputs have independent level controls but share the same playback feed. Do not plan on a separate headphone program solely because there are separate volume knobs.
Check the whole first-session setup
Use Focusrite's current setup and compatibility guidance for the actual computer and recording application. The USB-C connector uses USB 2.0 for the interface; the connector shape alone is not a Thunderbolt specification or a universal host-compatibility guarantee.
Make a cable list from the actual endpoints: microphone, instrument, computer, headphones and any monitor speakers. Verify the headphone plug or required adapter and the speakers' own connection guidance. Avoid adding accessories only because another Scarlett package includes them.
Record a short passage, play it back and confirm that the intended source reaches the intended track before starting a long session. Choose the Solo when its one-mic and one-line/instrument arrangement fits that plan. This assessment uses manufacturer documentation, not an original preamp-noise, latency or sound-quality test.
