PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen: Give a Small Listening Setup a Clear Starting Point
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose around a verified analog source, planned channel routing and an understood standby setting. Compare 3.5BT separately for wireless playback.
Best for
People building a compact analog listening pair who want accessible headphones and settings they can repeat.
The trade-off
Standard 3.5 has no Bluetooth. Active-box placement affects stereo routing; AUX sums with rear audio, and tuning controls do not constitute room calibration.

PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen / 2777500121
Black standard non-Bluetooth pair / one active and one passive
A compact listening setup becomes easier to use when the first session starts from a known arrangement. Which speaker carries the controls? Which output is feeding it? What happens after a long pause? The PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen answers those questions with a defined powered pair and straightforward analog connections.
This assessment covers the black standard Eris 3.5 pair, manufacturer SKU 2777500121, rather than the older E3.5 or the Bluetooth-equipped 3.5BT. The short names are easy to mix up. Confirm the generation and complete package before assuming a feature shown on another Eris listing is included.
Give the left and right channels a plan
The system contains one active speaker and one passive speaker. PreSonus recommends the active box on the left, with its partner on the right. The active box carries the controls and most connections, and supplies the passive box through the speaker wire.
This matters when the convenient position for a volume control happens to be on the other side of the screen. The manual says that placing the active box on the right requires reversing the source inputs to preserve the stereo image. Plan that arrangement from the actual source rather than assuming the labels will correct themselves.
Before buying, sketch the source, power outlet and cable between the boxes. Leave space to operate the front controls and reach the rear settings. After setup, use a familiar left/right channel check at a modest level so a routing error does not become part of every listening session.
Match the source before adding adapters
The pair accepts rear balanced quarter-inch TRS and unbalanced RCA line inputs, plus a front stereo 3.5 mm AUX input. Begin with the output your computer, interface or player actually provides. A digital-only device needs a separately verified conversion path.
The documented package includes a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable, a stereo 3.5 mm cable and speaker wire. Those are useful options, but they do not establish that every interface cable is included. If you intend to use balanced outputs, check the required pair of cables and include any extra cost in the comparison.
The manual describes the rear choices as flexible connections rather than a reason to attach several sources simultaneously. It also says the front AUX signal sums with the rear inputs. Use one intended source while checking the setup; an additional connection should be a deliberate decision, not an assumed automatic input switch.
Start with settings you can repeat
The manufacturer lists a 3.5-inch woven-composite woofer and a one-inch silk-dome tweeter. These identify the design, while the rear high- and low-frequency controls provide a way to adjust its balance. Neither the driver sizes nor the word monitor determines the result at your seat.
Begin with the tuning controls centered and a consistent listening position. Play a small set of familiar recordings, then change one control at a time. Note the settings you keep. A repeatable starting point is more useful for comparing material than changing placement, source volume and tone together.
The controls are adjustments, not an independent room calibration. This assessment includes no original frequency-response, noise or listening measurements. If production accuracy is your main reason to buy, evaluate the whole listening arrangement and compare work on another known playback system.

Understand pauses and private listening
With standby enabled, the documented power-saving mode engages after more than 40 minutes without audio and exits when playback resumes. Consider that behavior if the speakers will be used for occasional short clips. It is not a substitute for checking the chosen power setting.
The front headphone output mutes the speakers when connected, with the level knob controlling headphone volume. Check that level before changing listening methods. The two front sockets have different roles: AUX receives a source, while Phones sends audio to headphones.
Choose the Eris 3.5 2nd Gen when a planned analog pair, accessible headphone connection and repeatable tuning routine fit your use. Compare the BT model separately when wireless playback is necessary. A clear setup is the useful starting point; the name alone does not promise a finished studio.
