Klein ET140 Pinless Moisture Meter: Read the Material Mode First
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose ET140 for portable, non-invasive surface comparisons when its material modes and contact/depth limits fit; use another method for deeper measurements or a required material-specific test.
Best for
Homeowners or woodworkers making non-invasive comparisons on supported drywall, masonry, hardwood or softwood with suitable flat sensor contact.
The trade-off
Drywall and masonry readings are relative; sensing reaches only up to three-quarters of an inch. Material thickness, mode and flat contact matter, and the meter is not insulated.

Article summary
The rear sensor compares supported surfaces without puncturing them. Four material modes, hold and a coloured bar graph make checking convenient, but relative wall readings and shallow sensing depth need careful interpretation.
The exact ET140 is a pinless meter; the drywall-mode percent symbol represents a relative scale, not absolute water content.Image sourceEditorial image reference.Display copy resized and compressed. Original image.

A patch of wall can look dry while still giving a different moisture reading from the surrounding area. The Klein Tools ET140 offers a way to compare those surfaces without pushing pins through the finish. Its flat rear sensor detects moisture through the material's capacitance, with separate modes for drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood.
The reason to buy it is non-invasive checking across supported materials. The reason to read the instructions first is that the displayed number does not mean the same thing in every mode. For drywall and masonry, it is a relative reading, even though the screen shows a percent symbol.
Pick the material mode before interpreting the number
The ET140 cycles through drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood with its mode button. Klein's manual lists hardwood readings from zero to 35 percent and softwood from zero to 55 percent. Drywall and masonry use a zero-to-100 relative scale instead of a directly interchangeable wood-moisture measurement.
That distinction is central to the purchase. A drywall reading of 70 should not be described as proof that the wall consists of 70 percent water. Use the correct mode and compare readings in the context of the same material. Switching modes or comparing unlike materials can change what the number represents.
Klein also provides a coloured LED bar graph. Its green, yellow and red thresholds differ by material, so a red indication is not a universal pass-or-fail result for every building task. The display is useful for locating differences to investigate; it does not identify the source of a leak or certify that a repaired area is ready for every finish.

Keep the sensor flat and respect its shallow reach
The manufacturer specifies sensing depth up to three-quarters of an inch, or 19 mm. The sensor area is about 1.25 by two inches. The instructions tell you to press the back of the meter against a flat area, rather than taking a reading with only an edge touching the surface.
Klein also says the material should be at least three-quarters of an inch thick for the best accuracy, and suggests stacking thinner material when appropriate. That matters before buying for thin boards or layered wall assemblies. The tool's nominal reach does not make the visible surface the only thing relevant to the measurement.
A pinless sensor avoids the small punctures of a pin-type meter and makes repeated surface checks more convenient. The tradeoff is limited depth and the need for suitable flat contact. Do not treat it as an instrument that sees through an entire wall cavity or directly measures a pipe behind the wall.
Use hold and material-specific indicators together
The hold button locks the current reading on the screen until it is released or the meter powers off. That is a practical feature when a reading is easier to take than to see, or when you want to write down a value without keeping the sensor in position. Record the material mode with the value so the note remains meaningful.
The meter uses one included nine-volt battery and automatically powers off after ten minutes of inactivity. A low-battery indicator tells you when to replace the cell. It is a self-contained handheld instrument rather than an app-based logger; the hold function does not create a stored survey history.
For a homeowner comparing several spots or a woodworker checking supported stock, the useful routine is consistent placement and a clear record of mode and location. Repeatability matters more than collecting a single dramatic number.
Choose it for checking surfaces, with clear limits
The ET140 is not insulated. Klein warns against contact with areas where energized conductive elements may be present and requires approved eye protection. A moisture-checking feature is not permission to probe an electrically hazardous location.
The manual gives an operating range of 50 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit and less than 90 percent non-condensing relative humidity. Keep those conditions in mind for cold storage, hot spaces or damp work. The manufacturer specifies wiping the powered-off meter with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth and avoiding abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Choose the ET140 when non-invasive comparisons on drywall, masonry or supported wood are useful and its flat-contact, material-mode and depth limits fit the task. Choose another method when you need a deeper measurement, cannot obtain suitable sensor contact or require a specific material test for a consequential decision. Its value is a portable reading that guides further checking, not a complete diagnosis from one screen.
