Klein Tools 32308 Stubby Screwdriver: Adjustable Reach in an 8-in-1 Handle

THE BUYING TAKE

Buy the Klein Tools 32308 when close-quarter work regularly switches among its seven included bit sizes and benefits from selectable short reach. Choose a longer, higher-leverage, different-profile or properly insulated driver when the task requires it.

Best for
Maintenance, cabinet, fixture and appliance-panel work where a compact handle, adjustable short shank and stored Phillips, slotted and square bits match the fasteners.
The trade-off
The maximum 4.81-inch overall length is still short; the 2.5-inch handle offers less leverage than a full-size driver. The set has no Torx or hex bits, is not a ratchet and is not insulated.

Article summary

The Klein Tools 32308 combines a 1-to-2.75-inch adjustable shank with seven handle-stored Phillips, slotted and square bits plus a 1/4-inch nut driver. Its removable blade is impact rated, but the compact tool is not insulated and does not replace long, high-leverage or different-profile drivers.

A stubby screwdriver solves one clearance problem and can create another: the handle fits beside an obstruction, but a fixed short shaft may stop before the fastener. The Klein Tools 32308 addresses that compromise with a shank that adjusts from 1 to 2.75 inches while its seven bits stay inside the handle.

This is the exact 32308 8-in-1 model, not the longer 32303 or the newer 32308F flip-socket set. Its functions are seven screwdriver bits—Phillips #1, #2 and #3; slotted 3/16 and 1/4 inch; square #1 and #2—plus a 1/4-inch nut driver. The 2.5-inch Cushion-Grip handle keeps the form compact, and Klein lists the extended overall length as 4.81 inches.

A 1-to-2.75-inch shank changes reach without changing handles

The adjustable shank is the strongest reason to choose this tool over a fixed stubby. Retracted, it keeps the bit close to the handle for a cabinet corner, appliance panel or crowded box. Extending it adds up to 1.75 inches of reach when the surrounding space accepts the small handle but the screw sits behind a lip or recess.

That range does not make the 32308 a general-purpose long screwdriver. At full extension, the complete tool remains only 4.81 inches long. Deep equipment bays may still need a dedicated long driver or extension, and the short 2.5-inch handle offers less leverage than a full-size handle when a stubborn fastener demands high manual torque. The value is selectable short reach, not maximum reach.

Seven stored bits cover three common screw profiles

Klein houses all seven industrial-strength bits in the handle. Phillips, slotted and square profiles cover many cabinet, fixture, switch-plate and general maintenance screws without carrying several separate stubby drivers. Because each size is named, the set is easy to audit before work begins: three Phillips sizes, two slotted sizes and two square sizes.

The included range is useful but specific. There are no Torx, hex, Pozidriv or security bits, and the 1/4-inch nut-driver function does not cover other hex-head sizes. Onboard storage reduces loose pieces only when every bit is returned to its slot. Choose a purpose-built driver when the fastener profile, fit or torque requirement falls outside these seven bits.

The removable blade adds an impact-driver workflow

Klein describes the removable blade as impact rated and says it can be used as an impact-driver attachment. That gives the same bit holder a second workflow: make a controlled manual start with the stubby handle, then move the blade to a compatible impact driver where powered driving is appropriate. A stainless-steel holder with rare-earth magnets retains the selected bit and can help keep a fastener at the tip.

Impact rating is not permission to use every bit on every load. Match the bit to the fastener, follow the power-tool maker's limits and replace damaged bits. Magnetic retention helps positioning; it does not square a misaligned bit, prevent cam-out or stop cross-threading. The handle itself should be used as the hand tool Klein designed, while the removable blade is the stated impact attachment.

Buy it for confined mixed-fastener work—not live circuits

The 32308 fits buyers who repeatedly meet Phillips, slotted and square screws in close quarters and want one compact handle that can change reach. Its adjustable shank and self-storing bit set solve two different inconveniences: access behind shallow obstructions and repeated trips for another stubby size. The removable impact-rated blade adds value for users who already own a compatible driver.

Skip it if most work needs Torx or hex bits, a long shaft, high manual leverage or an insulated hand tool. Klein explicitly marks the 32308 as not insulated and warns that it will not protect against electrical shock. The manufacturer also requires approved eye protection and says not to use the tool for prying or chiseling.

The buying case is therefore narrow but clear. The 32308 is not an all-purpose screwdriver kit; it is a compact, adjustable-reach carrier for seven specified bits and one 1/4-inch nut-driver function. When those profiles match the job and the circuit is de-energized, it can replace a handful of fixed stubby drivers without pretending to replace the rest of the toolbox.
