Kreg KMA2900 Multi-Mark Layout Tool: Transfer Measurements and Set 3/16-Inch Reveals

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the Kreg KMA2900 when small trim, cabinet or frame projects repeatedly require measurement transfer, square marks, 45° marks and 3/16-inch reveals. Skip it when the work needs a longer rule, arbitrary-angle setting, inspection-grade precision or a full-size level.

Best for
DIYers, trim installers and small-shop woodworkers who want one compact setup tool for transferring short measurements, marking fixed 0°/45°/90° references and repeating a 3/16-inch reveal.
The trade-off
The rule stops at 6 inches / 15 cm, the body offers only three fixed positions, and each position change requires loosening and retightening the thumb screw. Its compact vial is useful for small alignment checks but does not replace a long level.

Article summary

The Kreg KMA2900 Multi-Mark combines a sliding 0–6 inch / 0–15 cm rule with fixed 0°, 45° and 90° positions, a 3/16-inch reveal guide and a small built-in level. It is most useful for repeatable trim, cabinet and picture-frame layout—not long measurements or arbitrary angles.

A narrow trim reveal can drift before the cut is ever made. Measure with a rule, reach for a square, reset the offset, then repeat on the next corner—and a small difference follows every tool change. The Kreg KMA2900 Multi-Mark is built for that setup work. It combines a sliding stainless-steel rule, a fixed 3/16-inch (5 mm) reveal guide, three defined rule positions, and a small bubble level in one polymer body. The point is not to replace every measuring tool. It is to keep short, repeatable layout steps on one reference.

Lock a reference instead of rebuilding it

The clearest buying benefit is measurement transfer. Set the rule against the first workpiece, tighten the brass thumb screw, and carry that same offset to the next board or cabinet part without reading and re-entering a number. Kreg specifies a working range of 0–6 inches, or 0–15 cm, with imperial and metric markings on the removable rule. That is enough for many face-frame offsets, shelf locations and short scribe lines while keeping the tool compact.

The molded 3/16-inch (5 mm) reveal guide adds a second repeatable reference for trim. Instead of measuring that offset at every point, the body can register against an edge while the guide establishes the reveal. This is especially useful when the goal is consistency across several short runs, not a single long measurement. The guide is fixed at 3/16 inch; it is not an adjustable reveal system.

Three fixed positions cover recurring layout jobs

Loosen the thumb screw and the same rule can be placed at 0°, 45° or 90°. In the 0° position, Kreg's manual shows it working as a depth gauge, general scribing guide and measurement-transfer tool. The 90° position creates square reference marks, while the 45° position supports miter layout for work such as frames and trim.

That three-position arrangement is the other strong buying reason. A small project can move from transferring an offset to marking a square line or a miter reference without finding a separate short square. The positions are discrete, not continuous: the KMA2900 cannot be dialed to 22.5°, 30° or an arbitrary roof angle. Repositioning also means loosening, moving and securely retightening the screw, so it favors deliberate setup over rapid one-handed adjustment.

The removable rule and compact level add useful checks

The stainless-steel scale can be removed and used as a simple six-inch rule. That gives the tool a straightforward fallback when the blue body would block access to a corner. The built-in vial also offers a quick level check on small work; Kreg specifically illustrates it for hanging a picture frame.

Those extras are convenient, but their scale matters. A short vial cannot show alignment across a cabinet run or replace a longer spirit level, and a six-inch rule cannot establish long shelf spacing without stepping the measurement. The KMA2900 is a compact layout aid, not a precision machinist's square, digital angle gauge or calibration instrument.

Where the KMA2900 earns its place—and where it does not

The Multi-Mark makes the most sense for cabinet details, casing, picture frames and small woodworking assemblies where the same short dimension or reveal must be repeated. Its 9.25 x 5 x 1.25-inch overall dimensions still leave room for the body and locking hardware, so buyers should judge access by the complete tool rather than the rule alone.

Choose it when consolidating a short rule, fixed-angle marker, reveal guide and small level will remove setup changes from a real project. It is less compelling for someone who mostly measures boards longer than six inches, needs freely selectable angles, or already uses dedicated squares and gauges without losing the setting. It will not cut, drill or correct an inaccurate reference; its value is preserving a good setup long enough to mark it consistently.
