Kreg R3 Pocket-Hole Jig: Set the Thickness and Bring a Clamp
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose the R3 for portable pocket-hole preparation with appropriate stock, access and supporting tools; choose another setup for poor access, out-of-range material or faster integrated clamping.
Best for
Occasional shelf, drawer-box and repair projects where a portable pocket-hole jig fits the access and the stock is one-half to one-and-a-half inches thick.
The trade-off
A clamp and power drill are separate requirements; nine thickness settings and the bit collar need correct setup, and included screw samples do not replace project-specific supplies.

A small shelf project does not always need a bench-mounted joinery station. Sometimes the useful tool is one you can carry to a board, clamp near its edge and put away with its drill bit when the work is done. The Kreg R3 Pocket-Hole Jig takes that portable approach to drilling the angled pockets used for screw-connected wood joints.
The blue jig contains two hardened-steel drill guides in a glass-reinforced nylon body. Its value is a repeatable guide and adjustable positioning in a compact kit. It still depends on a separate drill, secure clamping, appropriate screws and a carefully prepared workpiece. Those requirements belong in the buying decision from the start.
Match the jig and bit depth to the material
Kreg lists a material range from one-half inch to one-and-a-half inches, with nine settings in one-eighth-inch increments. Independent positioning sliders set the jig relative to the board's thickness. Press the slider button and align the appropriate thickness mark with the arrow on the body, following the supplied instructions.
The drill bit's stop collar is a second setup item. A depth-setting gauge is molded into the carrying case, keeping that reference near the bit rather than asking you to find a separate measuring aid. The selected kit includes a stepped drill bit and collar for making the pocket and pilot hole.
Do not confuse adjustable settings with automatic measurement. Confirm the actual material thickness, set the jig and collar as directed, and choose the proper pocket-hole screw for the joint. A scrap test using matching stock is a sensible check before drilling visible project parts. The guide cannot correct an incorrect setting or an unsuitable screw.
Bring a clamp, because the adapter is not one
The R3 includes a clamp pad adapter. Kreg says it allows the jig to be secured with a standard bar clamp, C-clamp or Kreg Face Clamp. That flexibility is a useful reason to choose a small portable jig when suitable clamps are already part of your workshop.
The adapter is not an included clamp. A product photo showing a face clamp demonstrates use rather than expanding the kit contents. Budget for an appropriate clamp and drill if you do not already have them, and check that the chosen clamp can reach and hold the workpiece at the required position.
Portable repair work also depends on access. You need room to place and secure the jig and to bring the drill into line with its guides. A joint hidden inside a cramped cabinet may not offer that room. Think through the drilling position before assuming that a small jig fits every repair.

The guides and chip openings support repeated positioning
The two drill guides are spaced seven-eighths of an inch centre to centre. Their hardened-steel construction is designed for contact with the bit, while a chip-relief opening serves each guide hole. Those are useful details for repeated pocket-hole preparation: the guide supports the drilling path and the openings give chips a route out.
They do not create a powered jig or guarantee a finished joint's strength. Secure the board, follow the drilling instructions and manage chip buildup as you work. The drill supplies the rotation; the R3 provides the guide. Kreg's lifetime warranty statement applies to the drill guides, so it should not be read as an unlimited promise covering every plastic part or every result.
For occasional shelves, drawer boxes and other suitably planned wood projects, the portable format can earn its place without becoming a permanent fixture on the bench. If constant repositioning and clamping dominate a large batch, compare a jig with an integrated clamping arrangement.
Treat the case as a small joinery kit
The selected R3 kit includes the jig, stepped bit, six-inch square-drive bit, depth collar, clamp adapter pad, Allen wrench, screw and plug samples, carrying case and manual. The samples help identify the system's accessories; they are not a project-sized supply of every screw you may need.
Keeping the collar gauge and bits in one case makes the tool more coherent for occasional use. Choose the R3 when you want portable pocket-hole preparation, work within its stated thickness range, and can supply the supporting drill, clamp and correct screws. Choose a different setup when access is poor, your material falls outside the range, or production work calls for faster built-in clamping.
