LAMY Safari Fountain Pen: Check the Grip Before You Choose

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the black M-nib safari when its shaped grip and cartridge-or-converter routine suit regular note-taking; try another grip or nib grade when those details do not fit.

Best for
Notebook writers who prefer defined finger positions and want a refillable fountain pen with a visible ink level and optional bottled-ink filling.
The trade-off
The shaped grip will not suit every hold. This is the medium nib; other grades and the Z28 converter are separate choices. Ink changes and periods of disuse call for cleaning.

Before choosing a fountain pen for a notebook, think about where your fingers will sit. The LAMY safari has shaped grip surfaces that make the holding area a visible part of the design. That can be useful if you want a repeatable place for your fingers, but it deserves more attention than the color of the barrel.

The selected pen is the black safari with a polished steel M nib. It is a cartridge fountain pen with a blue LAMY T10 cartridge included, rather than the safari rollerball or mechanical pencil. Its useful buying case combines that particular grip with a refill system you can maintain.

Let the grip make the first decision

The safari's shaped front section gives your fingers defined contact surfaces near the nib. For someone who likes a guided holding position, this is a concrete reason to consider it. You are choosing a physical arrangement you will touch throughout a page of notes, not simply a distinctive-looking pen.

The same shaping may be less appealing if you habitually rotate a round barrel or place your fingers differently. An ergonomic description does not establish that every hand will prefer it. If possible, hold a safari at a retailer and write a few ordinary lines before committing to one for longer sessions.

The body also has a flattened form that LAMY describes as helping prevent rolling, alongside a spring clip for carrying it. Those features suit a pen that moves between a notebook and a desk. They are useful details to consider, without turning the plastic body into a claim that the pen cannot be damaged.

Buy the medium nib for your actual handwriting

The M marking on the selected steel nib means medium. LAMY's nib guide distinguishes width from other choices such as a beginner's or left-handed nib. A listing that offers several grades does not mean one purchased pen arrives with all of them.

Consider the size of your writing and the space on the page. LAMY advises a finer nib for smaller handwriting and a broader one for larger scripts. This medium version is therefore something to assess against the notebook and letter size you already use, rather than automatically calling it the best beginner choice.

The manufacturer also offers replacement nibs, so a compatible nib change can alter the writing arrangement without replacing the whole pen. That is a useful longer-term option, not a reason to ignore the initial choice. A different nib does not remove the shaped grip that made you consider or reject the safari in the first place.

Start with the cartridge, then decide about a bottle

The included blue T10 cartridge lets you begin with a cartridge-based ink routine. The barrel's viewing window gives a way to check the ink level, which is useful before taking the pen away from the rest of your supplies.

For bottled ink, LAMY identifies the Z28 converter as the appropriate accessory. It replaces the cartridge in the filling system. Treat it as an additional purchase unless the specific retailer's package explicitly includes it; this selected pen listing promises the T10 cartridge, not a bottle-and-converter set.

Choose the simpler cartridge routine if convenient replacement matters most. Consider a converter if choosing bottled inks is part of the reason for buying a fountain pen. More filling options add little value if you would rather never handle a bottle or clean between colors.

Keep the refillable pen useful after the first cartridge

Refilling is only part of ownership. LAMY's care guidance calls for cleaning the ink system, particularly after disuse or when changing ink colors. Its FAQ recommends plain water for the front section and cautions against adding soap or detergent.

That makes a little upkeep part of the purchase. The safari is more convincing as a regular writing tool when you will keep ink available and look after the feed. Choose this black M-nib pen when its grip, line-width choice and refill routine fit your notebook habits; choose another format when a round grip or a simpler writing routine matters more.
