Logitech G502 HERO Mouse: Buttons Explained

THE BUYING TAKE

The G502 HERO earns its place through useful button assignments and versatile scrolling, provided you prefer a substantial right-handed mouse and accept a cable.

Best for
Right-handed PC gamers who want extra controls and also use the same mouse for everyday desktop work.
The trade-off
The 121-gram body favors people who want some heft, and the cable needs desk space. Custom assignments require G HUB setup on a supported computer.

What do the G502 HERO buttons do?

Main clicks and wheel press
Left click, right click and middle click; tilting the wheel left or right adds two assignable actions.
Thumb controls
Buttons 4 and 5 are Back and Forward; G6 is DPI Shift. Their behavior depends on the active profile.
DPI and profiles
G7 lowers sensitivity, G8 raises it and G9 cycles onboard profiles.
Wheel-mode button
Switches between stepped and free-spinning scrolling. This mechanical control cannot be programmed.

The 11 programmable controls include the main clicks and wheel actions. Before buying, name two commands you would assign and consider thumb reach and the 121 g weight.

Reaching across the keyboard for the same game command gets old. The Logitech G502 HERO gives your mouse hand more to do, with programmable controls arranged around a sculpted right-handed body. That can make it useful for both gaming and everyday desktop tasks. The decision is whether those controls matter more to you than low weight and wireless convenience.

Give the extra buttons a specific job

The G502 HERO has 11 programmable controls, including the main clicks, thumb-side buttons and scroll-wheel actions. That is a configuration count, not 11 extra buttons waiting under your thumb. Logitech G HUB lets you assign commands and adjust sensitivity; the separate button that changes the wheel's scrolling mode is not programmable.

Start with two actions you repeatedly reach for, such as a game inventory command and a push-to-talk key. Put them on controls you can reach without changing your grip. A few useful assignments are a better reason to buy this mouse than filling every available slot simply because it exists.

The thumb-side DPI Shift button can temporarily change pointer sensitivity while held, or take another assignment. If its position does not suit your thumb, remapping it changes its function, not its reach. The asymmetric shape and left-side controls make this a poor starting point for someone shopping for left-handed use.

Choose the right kind of scrolling

The wheel offers two modes: a stepped setting for controlled scrolling and a free-spinning setting for moving through longer pages. A physical button switches between them. This is a practical part of the G502's appeal if the same computer handles documents, browsing and games.

Use the stepped mode when you want distinct increments, such as moving through a menu. The freer mode is useful when the goal is getting farther down a long document. The wheel also tilts left and right, giving you two more assignable actions without another pair of buttons on the side.

Decide on weight before chasing DPI

The mouse weighs 121 grams, about 4.3 ounces, before adding any of the included weights. Five 3.6-gram pieces let you add up to 18 grams and change their placement. They provide a way to add heft, not make the base mouse lighter.

That distinction matters if your priority is fast, repeated sweeps with as little weight as possible. If you prefer a lighter mouse, Logitech lists the wired G502 X at 89 grams. That gives you a related model to compare when the HERO's starting weight already exceeds what you want.

Sensitivity settings are a separate decision. Choose a setting that fits your available mouse space and how far you like to move your hand. A high maximum DPI figure does not, by itself, establish that a mouse will make you more accurate. Button reach and your tolerance for the weight deserve attention first.

Leave room for the cable and configuration

This is the wired G502 HERO, not a LIGHTSPEED wireless model or a G502 X. Its 2.1-meter cable needs a route to a USB port with enough slack for your normal movements. There is no battery to recharge, but there is still a cable to manage around the keyboard and monitor stand.

Plan to use G HUB on a supported Windows or macOS computer to customize assignments. Check software installation rules before choosing it for a managed work computer. Onboard memory can retain supported settings after configuration; basic use does not mean leaving the setup application open all day.

The included weights do not require an extra purchase. Any adapter needed for your computer's ports is a separate cost to check. Choose the G502 HERO when you can name the commands and scrolling options you will use, and its weight already sounds acceptable. If the main goal is a lighter hand or a cable-free laptop bag, those priorities point elsewhere.
