Logitech G305 vs G502 HERO Gaming Mice: Wireless or More Controls?

The G305 favors wireless movement and lower listed weight; the wired G502 HERO adds programmable controls and a dual-mode tilt wheel. Choose by the movements and shortcuts you repeat each day.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose the G305 for lower listed weight, wireless movement, and laptop portability. Choose the G502 HERO when extra commands and wheel modes are worth its heavier body and cable.

When a mouse cable catches during a broad sweep, wireless movement has an obvious purpose. When a game command sits on an awkward keyboard key, an extra reachable mouse control can matter more. The Logitech G305 LIGHTSPEED and wired G502 HERO address those priorities differently. The recommendations below draw on Logitech's published specifications and operating guides.

Choose the G305 if you want the lighter of these two mice, wireless movement, and a receiver that stores inside it for laptop travel. Choose the G502 HERO if extra assignments and a versatile scroll wheel will earn their place on a permanent desk. This comparison covers the black G305, part 910-005280, and the black wired G502 HERO, part 910-005469.

Start with the weight you will actually move

Logitech lists the G305 at 99 grams with one AA battery installed. The G502 HERO starts at 121 grams for the mouse itself, before its optional weights. That is a 22-gram difference between the published configurations, with the G502's cable adding a separate desk-management consideration.

For fit, look beyond weight. The G502 HERO has a pronounced right-handed thumb rest and extra controls along the left side; the G305 has a rounded shell and two side buttons. Use a mouse you already like as a reference for grip and reach. Neither layout guarantees comfort in your hand.

For frequent lifting or broad mouse movements, the G305 offers less mass and no attached cable to route. For someone who prefers a pronounced thumb rest and more sculpted body, the G502 may justify its extra heft. Its five included 3.6-gram weights let you add weight and alter its distribution. Removing them does not reduce the 121-gram base figure, so they cannot solve a preference for a lighter mouse.

More controls matter when you can name their jobs

The G305 has six programmable controls, including its main clicks and wheel click, with two thumb buttons on the left. That is enough for a restrained setup: perhaps back and forward while browsing, or two frequently used game actions. Its appeal is having the essentials without a larger cluster to learn.

The G502 HERO provides 11 programmable controls through Logitech G HUB. That count includes normal clicks and wheel actions; it does not mean 11 additional thumb buttons. Its thumb-side DPI Shift control can temporarily change sensitivity while held or receive another assignment.

Before choosing it, name the commands that your current mouse cannot accommodate. Inventory, push-to-talk, or a recurring desktop shortcut can make extra controls useful. Reach still matters: reassigning a button changes its function, not where your thumb must land. The G502's asymmetric shell and left-side controls particularly favor right-handed use; the G305 also places its side buttons on the left.

The G502 wheel can earn its keep outside games

The G502 HERO's wheel switches mechanically between stepped scrolling and a freely spinning mode. It also tilts left and right for additional assignable inputs. That gives it a second purchase reason beyond game buttons: the same mouse can handle long documents differently from menus that call for distinct scroll steps.

The G305 keeps a simpler wheel without left/right tilt. If your mouse spends most of its time aiming and clicking, that simplicity may be sufficient. If you repeatedly move through long pages and also want sideways wheel actions, the G502 offers a concrete capability the G305 lacks.

The mode-switch button should not be counted as another programmable control. Nor does a free-spinning wheel suit every task; the useful feature is being able to choose its behavior. Buy the G502 for scrolling options you expect to use, rather than assuming every extra control improves a game.

Choose which routine you want to maintain

The G305 connects through its LIGHTSPEED USB receiver, not Bluetooth, and stores that receiver inside the mouse for transport. It runs on a replaceable AA cell rather than charging over USB. Logitech rates Performance mode for up to 250 hours of continuous gaming; actual runtime varies with the battery, use, and computing conditions. A spare AA makes replacement straightforward, but someone who specifically wants built-in charging should look beyond this pair.

The G502 HERO needs no battery routine. Its wired USB connection instead requires a cable route with room for your movements. Both choices need a suitable USB connection, and customized assignments require G HUB setup on a supported computer. Both offer onboard memory for supported saved settings; check software-installation rules before buying for a managed work machine.

Logitech specifies a maximum of 12,000 DPI for the G305 and 25,600 for the current G502 HERO. The larger ceiling does not establish better aim. Weight, shape, accessible commands, and scrolling are stronger reasons to choose between them.

For a laptop setup or someone whose main complaint is a cable crossing the mouse space, pick the G305. For a desk shared between games and long documents, pick the G502 HERO when you will use its extra assignments and wheel modes and already accept its weight. If your current mouse fits well and neither problem bothers you, this comparison supplies no pressing reason to replace it.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01Logitech G G305 LIGHTSPEED / 910-005280 — Black

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The lower listed operating weight suits buyers choosing between these two mice for repeated lifting and broad mouse movements.
  • A receiver that stores inside the mouse and replaceable AA power make a cable-free setup practical to pack and restore without a charging cable.
THE LIMITS
  • It needs its USB receiver and does not connect through Bluetooth.
  • Power comes from a replaceable AA cell rather than built-in USB charging.
  • Six programmable controls and no wheel tilt leave fewer input options than the G502 HERO.

02Logitech G502 HERO / 910-005469 — Black / Wired / Mouse; single G502 HERO, US model 910-005469

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Additional assignable controls can keep recurring game commands or desktop shortcuts on the mouse when a six-control layout is insufficient.
  • The dual-mode tilt wheel gives long-document scrolling and extra wheel inputs a distinct place beside its gaming controls.
THE LIMITS
  • Its 121-gram base weight cannot be reduced by removing the optional add-on weights.
  • The cable needs routing and slack for normal mouse movements.
  • The right-handed shape and thumb-button reach may not suit every hand, and configuration requires compatible software.
