MEATER Plus Meat Thermometer: Monitor Without a Cable

THE BUYING TAKE

A strong upgrade for one-protein, cable-free leave-in monitoring, provided the 527°F ambient limit and Bluetooth-style range fit the way you cook.

Best for
Home cooks who want to monitor one roast, chicken, steak, smoker cook, rotisserie, or covered-grill session without a probe cable running out of the cooker.
The trade-off
It monitors one protein at a time, real range depends on cooker and obstacles, it is not recommended over open flame, and the cheaper MEATER SE uses the same probe performance.

Article summary

MEATER Plus removes the cable from leave-in temperature monitoring, pairing one dual-sensor probe with a Bluetooth-repeating bamboo charger and app guidance—but its range, one-probe design, and 527°F ambient limit matter.

A leave-in meat thermometer is useful until its cable has to snake through an oven door, around a grill lid, or across a crowded counter. An instant-read thermometer avoids the wire but only if you keep walking back to check the food. MEATER Plus sits between those routines: one wireless probe stays in the food while a bamboo charging dock repeats the Bluetooth signal to your phone.

That makes it useful for one roast, chicken, steak, or smoker cook when you want to monitor temperature without repeatedly opening the appliance. It is less compelling if you need several probes, cook directly over very high heat, or expect whole-home Wi-Fi range without another device.

The missing cable is the real upgrade

MEATER Plus uses two sensors in one probe. One tracks the internal food temperature while the other measures the surrounding cooking environment. The probe talks to the bamboo charger, and the charger acts as a Bluetooth repeater toward your phone or tablet.

The companion app adds guided cooking, alerts, and an estimate of remaining cook and rest time. Those features are helpful, but the practical benefit is simpler: the probe can stay inside an oven, smoker, rotisserie, or covered grill without a lead running out through the door or lid.

For someone who already uses a leave-in wired thermometer, that cable removal is the main reason to pay for the Plus. If you only make quick spot checks, a fast instant-read thermometer is still the simpler tool.

Range depends on the cooker, not just the number on the box

MEATER advertises Bluetooth range up to 165 feet, but its support guide explains the two-stage connection. The probe first talks to the charging dock, and the dock repeats the signal toward the phone. The dock therefore needs to stay reasonably close to the cooker.

Walls, metal appliances, cooker thickness, and device placement can shorten the useful distance. That matters with stainless-steel ovens, smokers, and covered grills, which can be difficult environments for radio signals.

Treat 165 feet as an up-to figure rather than a promise through every wall or cooker. If you need dependable monitoring across a large property or want Wi-Fi without keeping a phone in the Bluetooth chain, a Wi-Fi-focused thermometer or another MEATER model is a better fit.

Heat limits decide where it belongs

MEATER rates the Plus probe for food temperatures up to 212°F and ambient temperatures up to 527°F. The company also says its Alpha Collection, including Plus, is not recommended over an open flame; its higher-heat Pro models are intended for that kind of cooking.

That makes Plus a reasonable match for roasting, smoking, baking, air frying, sous vide, and many covered-grill cooks that stay inside those limits. It is not the right probe for aggressive direct-flame searing or situations where the ambient end may see substantially higher heat.

The probe is water-resistant and dishwasher safe. MEATER says a full probe charge supports about 24 hours of continuous cooking, while the bamboo charger uses one AAA battery.

One probe keeps the system simple—and sets the limit

The standard MEATER Plus package monitors one piece of food at a time. For a weeknight chicken, a roast, or one large cut in a smoker, that is often enough. For entertaining or cooking several proteins to different targets, one probe quickly becomes the constraint.

There is also a value decision inside MEATER's own lineup. MEATER says the less expensive SE uses the same probe performance as Plus; the Plus mainly adds the signature bamboo charger and its repeater role. Compare those two if function matters more than presentation.

Buy it for one-protein, cable-free monitoring

MEATER Plus makes the most sense when the annoyance you want to remove is the probe cable itself. You get continuous internal and ambient readings, app guidance, and the freedom to check one cook from a nearby phone without repeatedly opening the cooker.

Skip it if you mainly need instant spot checks, routinely cook over open flame, want several probes at once, or need Wi-Fi-style range around a large home. At its current US direct price above $40, the value is specific: one wireless probe, one compact repeater dock, and less hardware hanging out of the cooker.
