Vampliers VT-001-5 Mini Screw Extractor Pliers: Front Grip for Damaged 2–3.5 mm Screw Heads

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the Vampliers VT-001-5 when small damaged screw heads stand proud enough to grip and bench-scale access matters. Skip it for flush or countersunk heads, larger fasteners, live electrical work, cosmetic surfaces that must remain unmarked, or jobs that call for a drilled extractor.

Best for
Electronics repair, hobby benches, appliance controls, laptops, game consoles, and other small-device work involving exposed M1.2–M2 fasteners with 2–3.5 mm heads.
The trade-off
The narrow capacity excludes common larger household fasteners; hard serrations can mark nearby finishes; a flush head gives the jaws nothing to grab; and an ESD-safe handle is not a live-circuit insulation rating.

Article summary

The 5-inch Vampliers VT-001-5 uses front-facing serrations to grip exposed damaged screw heads from 2 to 3.5 mm, while a 100 g body and ESD-safe TPR handles suit small electronics work. Its compact scale is the point, but it cannot reach flush heads, replace a precision driver, or handle the larger fasteners covered by full-size extraction pliers.

A stripped recess is especially frustrating on a small device. The fastener may be too delicate for an aggressive drill-out, yet too round for an ordinary needle-nose plier to hold. Vampliers built the VT-001-5 around a different contact point: its nose approaches the outside of an exposed screw head rather than depending on the damaged drive recess.

This is the black-handled 5-inch VT-001-5, manufacturer part VMPVT-001-5, not the 6.25-inch VT-001 or a gift-set variant. Vampire Tools lists a 2–3.5 mm screw-head range for M1.2–M2 fasteners, a 127 mm overall length, and a 100 g weight. Amazon child B00LMMU2HG matches that exact identity.

Front teeth engage the head instead of the recess

Vampire Tools explains that its jaw pattern combines vertical and horizontal serrations. The front teeth wrap around the remaining outside edge of a damaged head, while the inside serrations help maintain contact as the handles close. This geometry is the clearest reason to buy the tool: a chewed Phillips, slotted, hex, or specialty recess no longer has to transmit the turning force if enough of the head remains exposed for the jaws.

That condition matters. The pliers cannot grip a fully flush or countersunk screw, and a paper-thin exposed edge may crumble before it turns. A seized fastener can also defeat the available contact. Stop if the tool starts shaving the head; penetrating treatment, heat used under an appropriate safety procedure, a drilled extractor, or replacement of the threaded part may be the safer next step.

Five-inch proportions fit small-device access

At 5 inches long and 3.53 ounces, the VT-001-5 is sized for controlled bench work rather than large mechanical fasteners. The official page names laptops, motherboards, circuit boards, phones, PCs, and game consoles among the intended applications. That short body is easier to position around a tiny exposed head without bringing a full-size plier across nearby connectors or enclosure walls.

The black TPR handles are listed with surface resistivity of 1×10⁶ to 1×10⁷ ohms and described as ESD-safe. That is useful context for static-sensitive repair, but it is not a 1,000-volt insulation claim. Disconnect power and follow the device maker's discharge and ESD procedures; do not treat the handle as permission to work on an energized circuit.

Hardened jaws trade gentleness for bite

Vampire Tools specifies high-carbon Japanese steel for the body and jaws at HRC 56±2. The hardness and serrated profile help the nose bite an already damaged fastener, but they also explain the main surface risk. The teeth can mark a reusable screw, a soft decorative head, or a nearby finish if the jaws slip. Protect the surrounding panel and plan to replace the extracted fastener instead of returning it to service.

Keep the published 2–3.5 mm head range attached to this exact model. It is not a general capacity for every part of the jaws, and it should not be stretched to cover the larger work handled by a 6.25-inch or 160 mm extraction plier. The tool's compactness is an advantage only when the fastener actually falls inside its intended scale.

Buy it for recurring tiny fasteners, not every stripped screw

The VT-001-5 makes the most sense on an electronics or hobby bench where small exposed screws fail often enough to justify a dedicated rescue tool. It adds a non-drilling first attempt between a fresh driver bit and destructive extraction, and the light, short body helps keep that attempt controlled.

It is less compelling for occasional full-size household hardware, deeply recessed screws, spinning inserts, or surfaces that cannot tolerate tooth marks. In those cases, a correctly sized bit, precision extractor, locking plier, or model with a larger documented range is the better purchase. Choose the mini Vampliers for its narrow job: getting a firm front grip on a small damaged head that ordinary pliers cannot usefully surround.
