Vampliers VT-001 Review: A Better Grip on Exposed Damaged Screws

THE BUYING TAKE

A strong buy for repeated exposed-head extraction, especially when a 6.25-inch combination plier fits the workspace; skip it for flush, countersunk, or below-surface failures.

Best for
Mechanics, maintenance workers, appliance and HVAC repairers, and DIYers who repeatedly face exposed 3–9.5 mm damaged screw heads.
The trade-off
It needs an exposed edge and handle-swing clearance, can mark fasteners or finishes, costs more than generic pliers, and its TPR handles are not rated for live electrical work.

Article summary

The full-size VT-001 turns exposed stripped or rusted screw removal into an outside-head gripping job, while adding ordinary plier and wire-cutting functions. Its value depends on having room around the fastener.

A rounded or rusted screw head often turns a five-minute repair into a hunt for extractors, drill bits, and enough clearance to use them. The Vampliers VT-001 takes a simpler route when the fastener still protrudes: its jaws bite the outside of the head so the damaged drive recess no longer has to transmit torque. This is the full-size 6.25-inch model, not the already-published VT-001-5 Mini. It is a focused recommendation for mechanics, maintenance workers, and DIYers who regularly meet exposed damaged screws and small fasteners.

Grip the head instead of the damaged recess

Vampire Tools specifies a 3–9.5 mm (0.12–0.37 inch) screw-head range for the VT-001. The high-carbon Japanese-steel jaws combine vertical and horizontal serrations, including teeth at the nose, to engage the outer edge of an exposed head. That geometry is the purchase case: a stripped Phillips, slotted, or specialty recess matters less when there is enough metal above the surface for the pliers to clamp.

The 6.25-inch length gives the tool more leverage and hand room than a precision plier while remaining compact enough for a general repair kit. A spring opens the handles between squeezes, and thermoplastic-rubber grips provide a broad contact area. Those details should make repeated grip-and-turn cycles more convenient, but they do not guarantee that every seized fastener will move. Penetrating oil, heat, or a different extraction method may still be necessary when corrosion or thread damage is severe.

One tool for extraction, gripping, and cutting

The VT-001 is also a combination plier rather than a single-purpose socket. Vampire Tools lists an 8 mm side-cutting blade with capacities of 3.2 mm for copper wire and 2.6 mm for steel wire. That can reduce tool changes during appliance, automotive, HVAC, or workshop jobs where a damaged screw appears alongside ordinary gripping or wire-cutting work.

Its body and jaws are rated by the manufacturer at HRC60±2, and the tool weighs 4.59 ounces (130 g). Those are useful construction details, not a promise that the jaws are indestructible. Stay within the stated cutting capacities, keep hardened wire away unless it fits the specification, and use eye protection when cutting. The red TPR-covered handles are not described as electrically insulated, so this is not a tool for live circuits.

Check access before you choose it

The most important limitation is access. These pliers need an exposed edge to surround and grip; they are not a substitute for a left-hand drill bit or internal extractor when a screw is flush, countersunk, or broken below the surface. The serrated jaws can also mark a reusable fastener or a nearby finished surface. Protect cosmetic areas and plan to replace the damaged screw after removal.

The 3–9.5 mm figure refers to screw-head diameter, not thread diameter and not a guaranteed torque range. Very wide heads, deeply recessed fasteners, and locations without room to rotate the handles fall outside the ideal use case. Buyers working mainly on electronics may prefer the smaller VT-001-5 Mini, while those needing more leverage may want a larger Vampliers model; neither is interchangeable with this exact VT-001 identity.

The evidence supports the asking price

On the Amazon US page crawled last week, the exact B006YJKAPQ listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from 3,170 ratings and a “500+ bought in past month” badge. Its complete offer area showed “New (4) from $31.97” with condition=NEW even though the quick summary said no featured offer. Vampire Tools listed the same $31.97 price when checked on October 10, 2026, along with Japanese manufacture and a four-year warranty with purchase. Prices, sellers, and badges can change, so confirm the current offer before ordering.

At roughly thirty-two dollars, the VT-001 costs more than generic combination pliers. The premium makes sense only if outside-head extraction is a recurring problem and the full-size handle fits the work. For an occasional flush screw, buy the extractor matched to that job. For repeated exposed, rounded, or rusted heads, this exact model earns its place by turning extraction into a controlled gripping task instead of relying on the damaged recess.
