Breville BOV900BSS Air Fryer Oven: Large-Batch Cooking

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the BOV900 when one large countertop appliance can replace several cooking tools; skip it if fast toast, compact size, or single-portion air frying matters more.

Best for
Households that regularly bake, roast, air fry, reheat, proof, dehydrate, or cook family-size portions without wanting to use a full-size oven every time.
The trade-off
It is large, heavy, slower to preheat than smaller appliances, and independent testing found full-capacity toast less even than smaller batches.

Article summary

The BOV900 combines a large countertop oven, air fryer, dehydrator, slow cooker, and more. Its 1-cubic-foot capacity is the reason to buy it—and the reason to measure your counter first.

A countertop oven only earns permanent space if it can take over enough real cooking jobs to justify its footprint. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is built around that idea: it combines a large toaster oven, convection oven, air fryer, dehydrator, broiler, slow-cook setting, proofing mode, and more in one 1800-watt stainless-steel appliance.

That versatility is the reason to consider it. The tradeoff is equally clear: this is a large, heavy machine that needs dedicated counter space and still will not beat a small drawer-style air fryer or slot toaster at every single task.

The size is useful only if you actually use the capacity

Breville lists a 1-cubic-foot interior that can fit a 13-inch pizza, a 9-by-13-inch pan, a 12-cup muffin tray, nine slices of bread, or a 14-pound turkey. That is much closer to a compact secondary oven than a basic toaster oven.

The outside is correspondingly substantial at 21.4 inches wide, 17.3 inches deep, and 12.7 inches high. Measure the counter and the clearance around it before buying. This is not a machine most people will want to lift in and out of a cabinet every morning.

The payoff is that a family can roast, bake, air fry, toast, reheat, or slow cook without turning on a full-size oven for every meal. If you regularly cook larger portions, that flexibility can matter more than compactness.

Thirteen functions reduce appliance overlap

The control panel covers Toast, Bagel, Broil, Bake, Roast, Warm, Pizza, Proof, Air Fry, Reheat, Cookies, Slow Cook, and Dehydrate. Breville pairs those programs with six independent quartz heating elements and Element IQ, which shifts power around the cavity based on the selected mode.

The practical benefit is not that every preset is magical. It is that the oven changes fan behavior, heat distribution, and timing to suit different jobs while still letting you adjust settings manually.

The included accessories support those jobs too: two oven racks, a 13-inch pizza pan, a 9-by-13-inch enamel roasting pan with broil rack, and a mesh basket for air frying and dehydrating.

Air frying is useful, but basket models can still be faster

Breville uses high-speed super convection for Air Fry and Dehydrate. Independent RTINGS testing found the BOV900 capable of producing mostly crispy, evenly browned air-fried food, helped by the large mesh basket and broad cooking chamber.

The same testing found an important limitation: it is slower than many good drawer-style air fryers. That makes sense because the Breville heats a much larger cavity.

If your top priority is the fastest fries for one or two people, a compact basket air fryer can be the better appliance. The BOV900 makes more sense when you want air frying plus baking, roasting, pizza, proofing, slow cooking, and larger portions in one machine.

Toasting and preheat speed are not its strongest reasons to buy

A premium countertop oven should still handle basic toast, but RTINGS found the BOV900 slow to preheat and less even when all nine toast positions were filled. Four-slice batches were much more consistent.

That is a useful buying distinction. If your morning routine is mostly two slices of toast, this is an expensive and oversized way to solve that problem. If toast is only one job among roasting, baking, air frying, and reheating, the compromise is easier to accept.

Breville’s LCD controls and interior light make the larger cooking workflow easier to manage, but they do not turn a big oven into a faster slot toaster.

The value comes from replacing multiple appliances

The strongest reason to buy the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is consolidation. A household that would otherwise use a toaster oven, air fryer, dehydrator, and small baking oven can move many of those jobs into one machine.

It is especially appealing for apartment kitchens, hot-weather cooking, holiday overflow, or homes where the full-size oven feels wasteful for smaller meals. The large interior is also useful for sheet-pan food and family portions that do not fit comfortably in compact air fryers.

Skip it if counter space is tight, fast single-portion air frying is the priority, or you mainly need toast. But if you want one premium countertop appliance to cover a long list of cooking jobs, the BOV900 has a much stronger case than a single-purpose gadget.
