Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED: Keep the Numpad, Reconsider the Reach

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the white GL Tactile full-size G915 X LIGHTSPEED when the number pad and extra controls have clear jobs. Check desk reach, exact variant and intended profiles before buying.

Best for
People who regularly use a number pad and want a low-profile wireless keyboard with programmable and media controls.
The trade-off
The full-size layout still occupies substantial desk width; tactile feel is personal, and software features and battery figures depend on configuration.

Article summary

The full-size G915 X LIGHTSPEED combines low-profile keys with a numpad and extra controls. Its strongest buying question is whether that broad layout earns its space on your desk.

A number pad is useful until it pushes the mouse farther away than you want. Extra controls can save a trip through a menu, yet they also occupy room and ask you to learn another layout. The full-size Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED sits squarely in that decision: it keeps the familiar number section while adding programmable controls, media buttons and a volume roller.

This assessment covers the white US-layout model with GL Tactile switches, part number 920-012685. It is the full-size wireless G915 X LIGHTSPEED, rather than the tenkeyless version or the wired G915 X. Check those distinctions before comparing offers; the shared family name does not make their layouts and connection options identical.

Give the number pad a job

Start with a normal work session rather than a keyboard feature list. Count how often you enter long columns of numbers, use the separate navigation cluster or reach for the media controls. If these are frequent actions, keeping them in fixed positions can be a practical reason to retain a full-size board.

Then place a ruler or an outline on the desk and leave room for the mouse movement you actually use. The low-profile design reduces the board's height; it does not remove the width of the number section. A shallow keyboard can still be the wrong choice for a narrow tray or a setup that needs more space beside the typing area.

The GL Tactile option provides a different switch feel from the family's Linear and Clicky choices. Logitech lists a 1.3 mm actuation point and 3.2 mm total travel. Those dimensions describe the mechanism, not a guarantee that you will type faster or make fewer mistakes. Try a comparable low-profile tactile feel if your preference is uncertain.

Separate useful shortcuts from extra complexity

KEYCONTROL and G HUB give this keyboard a route to remapping and macros. The manufacturer's nine G-key functions are not a reason to invent nine new habits on the first day. Choose one repeated, low-risk action, assign it clearly and check that it behaves as expected in the application where you need it.

Be particularly deliberate when a command changes with the active program. A shortcut that is convenient in one window can be confusing in another. Keep the standard layout available while learning the customized one, and test a command before relying on it during a live session.

The setup guide describes three onboard profiles loaded through G HUB and accessed with FN plus F2, F3 or F4 in onboard mode. That offers a way to retain prepared layouts, but do not assume that every software-dependent feature works identically without the application running. Confirm the specific configuration you intend to use.

Make connection and battery choices together

This model supports LIGHTSPEED through its receiver, Bluetooth and USB-C wired data operation. Decide which computer uses each connection and where the cable will sit. The guide identifies separate LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth controls, so the switching process is part of the everyday setup rather than something to infer from a wireless label.

The lighting setting also matters to charging expectations. The product listing quotes up to 36 hours with RGB at full brightness, 90 hours at half brightness and 800 hours with RGB off. These are conditional manufacturer figures, not three interchangeable promises. Actual use and settings can change the interval.

Keep the charging cable accessible even if you prefer wireless use. Check the receiver and cable package against the selected offer, especially when comparing a used or refurbished listing with the new retail version discussed here.

Choose the complete layout, then the finish

The white keycaps and silver-toned top distinguish this version visually, but the more consequential choice is the full-size arrangement. The volume roller and dedicated media controls may be useful for everyday playback; they do not compensate for a layout that leaves the mouse awkwardly placed.

Consider this keyboard when you regularly use the number section, want low-profile mechanical keys and have room for the extra controls. A smaller board is a reasonable alternative if those fixed sections mostly go unused. This is a specification-based buying assessment, not an original typing, wireless-latency or battery-life test.
