A mouse with more controls is useful only when those controls remove a real interruption. Logitech MX Master 4 adds a thumb-side Haptic Sense Panel and an on-screen Actions Ring to its scrolling and pointing controls. The sensible starting point is one task you repeat often, rather than a complete set of unfamiliar assignments.
This guide covers the Graphite 910-007558 version. It is based on Logitech's product and setup documentation, not a hands-on speed comparison. The goal is to separate the mouse's physical controls from the software choices that make its extra features relevant.
Pick one action you already repeat
Choose an action you can describe clearly: opening a tool, undoing an edit or switching to a particular command. Keep the normal keyboard shortcut available while you try assigning an alternative. That gives you an easy way to keep working if the new arrangement is not yet familiar.
Actions Ring places a set of shortcuts near the cursor and requires Logi Options+. The official setup guide describes opening it with the Haptic Sense Panel, then selecting an item. Start with a few recognizable commands rather than filling every available space immediately.
Test the arrangement in the application where you intend to use it. If you work in several programs, check each one separately before relying on the same movement everywhere. A shortcut that is helpful in an editor may not be the action you want in a browser.
Separate the two wheels from the thumb panel
The main MagSpeed wheel can move between stepped and free-spinning scrolling. Logitech describes automatic switching as you scroll faster, with a top button available for manual mode changes. Decide whether you prefer automatic switching or a more predictable manual routine.
Use a long document and then a short list to compare the modes. The point is not to scroll as far as possible, but to stop where you intend. If switching modes surprises you, review the SmartShift settings in Options+ before changing several other controls.
The side thumb wheel is another input, distinct from the Haptic Sense Panel. Its assignments can vary by application through software. Keep its first assignment simple, and check that your thumb can reach the wheel and panel without an awkward grip.

Treat haptics as feedback, not a shortcut itself
Haptic feedback provides a physical signal for supported actions. It does not mean that every action in every program will produce the same response. Logitech allows customization through Options+, including intensity and supported third-party integrations.
Use a known action when adjusting feedback so that you can tell what the signal represents. If the sensation is distracting, reduce it or simplify the configuration. The useful question is whether it helps you recognize an action, not whether the strongest setting feels more advanced.
Native Windows haptics are a separate compatibility consideration. Logitech's current product page specifies the Windows 11 update from late March 2026 onward and directs owners to update mouse firmware through Options+. Check the current support instructions before assuming an older installation has the same behavior.
Do not treat a manufacturer time-saving percentage as a prediction for your own work. Your assigned commands, applications and existing habits determine whether the extra controls save effort. Compare a familiar task before and after configuration instead of judging the mouse by the number of enabled features.
Check pairing and software access before buying
The setup documentation offers Bluetooth and an included wireless receiver for connection. Easy-Switch supports up to three paired computers. Decide which connection suits each computer, and confirm the physical port or adapter needed for the receiver you receive.
Pairing is only the first step. Options+ provides the customization behind Actions Ring and other assignments, so check the software's current operating-system requirements and installation permissions. A managed office computer may have different restrictions from a personal laptop.
After setup, restart the application you use most and confirm the expected pointer, scrolling and shortcut behavior. Keep a brief note of your assignments so that a future change is easy to understand.
MX Master 4 makes most sense when you want to build a small, useful control layout around actual work. Its additional features require some attention. Begin with one repeated task, keep the physical controls understandable, and expand only after the first change earns its place.
